Who wrote that?

Next time you see an article on Facebook, have a look and see if you notice the publisher article. This is part of Facebook’s efforts to help decrease the spread of fake news. They want to make it so instead of saying “I read this on Facebook”, you’ll be able to remember who actually wrote the article. In a recent study by the Pew Research Center found that only 56% of respondents could recall the source of a new link viewed on social sites. Do you think these publisher logos will improve the statistics?

How cluttered are your search results?

Google have announced a new update effecting mobile search results pages. From now on, if your search query returns video results, you’ll be shown a six-second clip to help you decide if you want to click through to the full video. Which six seconds will you be shown? This is down to Google’s algorithm which analyzes the whole video and determines which scenes best represent the video in its entirety. However, something to note, this six second clip will not change depending on your query, so it might not necessarily be showing the best preview to match your search.

Facebook are taking another step against fake news with their recent decision to block pages who have repeatedly shared fake news from advertising. This update aims to reduce the distribution of fake news, which let’s be honest, could have done with coming into action this time last year. Facebook claims that this update will help to “disrupt the economic incentives and curb the spread of false news”.

Don’t you just love a funky status update

I’m sure you’ve noticed that when you write a status on Facebook you now have the option to give it a coloured background and jazz up the text a little bit. Cool right? (Is it?) Now WhatsApp are introducing a very similar feature, where, you guessed it, you can upload a status to the app with a colourful background and funky text. This must be a sign that people are actually enjoying these kind of status updates and I’m sure we can expect to see them on Instagram soon.

I really hope I’m kidding on that last bit…
