Welcome back to Becca’s Hype, happy new year!
Let’s get stuck in!
Facebook is broken?
Mark Zuckerberg has finally come around to see that Facebook is broken. Every year, Zuckerberg sets himself a yearly challenge, and it seems that after spending 2017 changing his view on how much of an influence Facebook had throughout the 2016 US Election, he’s decided that this year would be a good time to fix the problems with the platform, and ensure that “time spent on Facebook is time well spent”. What on earth does this mean? That’s open to interpretation, but I think that changes need to be made fast. It’s now a daily occurance on my Twitter feed that I see people unhappy about how intrusive Facebook ads can be, and just how uncomfortable people are with the data being used. Have we reached a tipping point?
I suggest, if you haven’t already, that you watch this video focusing heavily on what Sean Parker, former Facebook president, and Chamath Palihapitiya, a former Facebook executive have to say on Facebook. Hint: One of them now avoids the platform entirely!
Share your Stories from… WhatsApp?
You probably noticed at the end of last year the increasing amount of cross posting between Facebook and Instagram. You can share your Instagram Stories to your Facebook Stories, and right now Facebook are testing the ability to cross-post Instagram Stories to your WhatsApp Status.
Your WhatsApp Status behaves in same way as Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat Stories, but it’s used a lot less in comparison. I expect that this test from Facebook is to see if they can improve the engagement rate. WhatsApp have more than 1.3 billion users, so the potential reach with cross-posting is huge.
The question we should be asking is, if this test rolls out and is successful in garnering lots of attention from users, what will happen to Snapchat. At New Years, even Snapchat employees had to resort to using Instagram Stories instead because Snapchat had been blocked at an exclusive party.
Facebook are continuing to strengthen their grasp on the market – surely it’s only a matter of time before Snapchat crumbles?
Expect Ads in Future on Amazon Alexa
Although not something which is happening yet, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be hearing ads on Amazon’s Alexa. Nothing has been announced officially yet, but companies are already thinking about the ways they’ll be able to incorporate audio ads into their strategy, whilst keeping it different from traditional radio style ads. There are things to consider such as how easy your brand name is to say, as well as how to insert products names into scripts so they sound natural.
How does the idea of these ads make you feel?
That’s all for this week’s hype, we’ll be back next week with more!
