Google offered Snapchat the big bucks:
Back in 2013, Facebook offered Snap Inc. $3 billion in a failed bid to buy the company. Since then, we’ve seen Facebook replicate each one of Snapchat’s features one by one. Now rumour has it that back in 2016 Google reportedly offered Snap Inc. $30 billion. That’s a huge jump! Snap has denied the rumours, however, since the news broke it has helped Snap’s share price begin to climb after a few weeks of decline.
Can you imagine this deal had gone ahead? We might have been looking at a Snapchat – Google Glass hybrid now, perhaps with the capability to stream your snaps live to Youtube. The possibilities that could have been!
Who’s going to use Stories now? Still no one!
Facebook wants to bring Stories to desktop, because we’re all using that feature so much, aren’t we? Stories have been a great success on Instagram, they now have 250 million daily users, significantly more than Snapchat’s 166 million. But have they been doing so well on Facebook? Not really. If anything they’ve just cluttered up the home page with ghosts of your friends.
Why the change? It’s not quite clear. At the moment it’s looking like Stories will work in the same way as they do on mobile (although we’re unsure if you’ll be able to upload from your desktop), and so they’ll disappear after 24 hours. Perhaps by having Stories on desktop, it will allow Facebook the freedom to give them a different purpose, perhaps a way of showing popular users in the network which are live streaming, for example. We will see!
Look out for sponsored GIFs
Hands up if you include a GIF in at least one of your messages every day. Ya. I’m guilty of it, and soon, you might start seeing sponsored GIFs. Honestly, it’s a bit of a surprise to realise that this wasn’t already a thing. Giphy are going to be testing this over the next few *insert time period here*. So now if you search for “I need coffee” next time you get into the office, you might see a starbucks GIF begging for your attention.
Snapchat is copied, again!
It wouldn’t be a normal Monday if news hadn’t broke of one of Snapchat’s features being copied again. Google is going to be creating their own version of Snapchat’s ‘Discover’ section. This is the carousel that appears within the app filled with news stories from various outlets. Google wants to incorporate AMP technology into their version and will this ‘Stamp’. Stories and AMP, get it?
These stories are going to be very similar in format to Snapchat’s, and will include slides with photos and videos that you can swipe through to discover more of the story. Stamp stories will be available on mobile within Google’s search results.
Exciting stuff! I’m very interested to see how Google will choose what stories are featured in Stamp, and how this will work. If outlets can buy a space on the carousel, will it be a case of who pays more gets to the front, or will they base it on ranking factors as well?
What a shame that deal wasn’t real between Snapchat and Google, imagine the potential of having Snapchat’s Discovery section and Google’s Stamp directly connected. Missed opportunity!
